Cows on Pasture

The cows are enjoying the pasture these days, and we were able to take some pictures this evening of some of the calves we are excited about.

We have a good selection of Purebred Angus bull calves, as well as a crossbred bull calf (pictured below) that will be  FOR SALE!

We hope to exhibit some of these calves at the upcoming late summer and fall shows including Old Home Week, Charlottetown, PE,  NB Beef Expo, Sussex NB, and  Expo Boeuf, Victoriaville, Quebec.

We are extremely happy with our herd sire pictured below :  Bannockburn Maples Kodiak. He is a HF Kodiak Grandson and we have used him on almost all of our cow herd last year and this year.

Visitors are welcome at anytime - just call the farm ahead to make sure we will be home.

Julie is taking lots of French classes, so we can even offer services 'EN FRANCAIS'!

Herd Sire: Bannockburn Maples Kodiak. Three Years old. HF Kodiak Grandson. He is the sire of almost all of the calves this year.

It's Suppose to be Springtime

Well its been a rough winter here in the East especially since February.  Several blizzards with 500 cm snow this winter  have made it very difficult  and everyone is looking forward to some warmer temperatures and green grass.
Calves are looking good this year with  about 90% bull calves  and lots of optimism in the beef industry.

Great final show of the year

Lots of hours and hard work for this accomplishment.   From left Joanne, Julie,
Stephen, and Ernie Mutch
Our last show of the season we made the 11 hour drive to Victoriaville, Quebec on Thanksgiving weekend to exhibit in the Expo Boeuf Angus show. We were very pleased and excited  that  Angus judge   Brent Stewart, Russell, Manitoba  made our bull calf Reserve Champion Bull and our 5 year old cow Grand Champion Female of the show. We also place 1st in Breeders Herd and exhibited 4th place overall in the heifer calf division. Thanks to the many cattlemen that stopped by our cattle for a chat and it was great that Julie qui pouvait parler en français. Thanks to Francis Boilard of Quebec who bought both bull calves.
No more shows for us until perhaps next summer-at least no steer shows.  After 47 years of breeding & exhibiting show steers at the Easter Beef show we have decided that this year was our last exhibiting there.  Best of luck to the Ian & Austin Drake  with the show steer they purchased from us.
Planning to attend the Cattle sale to be held in Nappan, Nova Scotia on October 25 where there will be a good selection of not only Angus cattle but Hereford, Shorthorn and Simmental on auction.  Sale starts at 12pm at the Bull Test Station for the purebred and commercial sale.

Sussex Show results

Last weekend was the New Brunswick Beef Expo held in Sussex with over 160 head of cattle of several breeds entered  from the Maritme provinces and Quebec.   We had a good day showing our Angus cattle with judge Don Currie from Ontario.     We had Grand and Reserve bulls  with our Upward and Net Worth  bull calves, Champion Heifer calf in the open show and also the NB Futurity judged by Dale Black,  1st place 2 year old pair and 1st place in the Cow calf class .  The cow and bull calf were Champion Female and also went on to 2nd place in the Supreme class. Congratulations to the Black family on their Supreme Female and to the Dixon family on winning Supreme Male with their great Hereford bull.   One more show for us to go this year as we will take a few head of Angus and couple of Simmentals to Victoriaville, Quebec in a couple of weeks. Also there will be several others  breeders from  the Maritmes making the trip too. Looking forward to it.
